So you’re thinking of starting your first website, and are breaking out in a sweat because the words Domain, Hosting, Nameservers, IP, FTP are all Chinese to you, and you just don’t even want to go there.
Gosh, I know what you mean.
When I started out, all this was crazy mumbo jumbo to me too, but I stuck with it and over time it started to make sense. But I want to help you get over your fears, and help you reveal your awesomeness, so I’m going to shine a light on all of this.
Go and grab a cuppa of the most delicious hot chocolate (or whatever else rocks your world) and let’s get started.
Domain
I could write a whole blog post about this (and will some day) but today I’m going to keep it short and sweet!
You know the little (yet SO important) name you type into the top of the browser? Broadly speaking, that’s your domain. What people use to get your website on their screen.
So for me that would be velocitymarketing.ie

Simple, right?
Hosting
Think of your hosting as an online cupboard, storing all your files and emails. When you create your website, with whatever platform you want (more on that later), files will be created and stored on your hosting account. Somewhere in the world this is stored on an actual (massive) computer, which you can be glad not to have standing in your living room.
Great, so “what now?” I hear you asking. Good question.
Now, you need to get your domain and your hosting to talk to each other. Basically, you need your domain to look up your files when someone types in the name in a browser. This is done through…
Nameservers
This is where a lot of people freak out. Domain Nameservers? What the hell is that supposed to be??
Don’t worry it’s not as scary as it sounds. It’s the unique address to your host’s server (that massive PC I was talking about earlier). This lets the internet gremlins connect your domain to your hosting. It looks something like this- NS1.nameserver.com and NS2.nameserver.com – the ‘nameserver’ part will be unique to your hosting company so for example NS1.bluehost.com
Once you’ve set those things up, you’re all ready for your website to be found on the World Wide Web.
Here are some useful links for finding you domain name or hosting.

Top Tip: If you can purchase the domain and hosting in one place as it will make things easier.
